Underscore.news selected as 2022 Report for America newsroom

We’re very pleased to announce that Underscore.news has been selected as a Report for America (RFA) newsroom in 2022, which means we will welcome a new reporter through the RFA program beginning on June 1.

Reporters interested in joining the Underscore team can now apply through RFA’s website. Underscore is seeking an Indigenous reporter with five or more years of professional experience, although we can be flexible on the criteria and encourage any journalist interested in the RFA position to apply.

Applications are accepted until Jan. 31, but those who apply before Dec. 31 will receive early consideration. Journalists can detail their specific interest in working for Underscore in the application. More information can be found here.

In its announcement email, RFA noted the “highly selective process” of choosing newsrooms and said Underscore’s selection “is a sign that our judges were impressed with the quality of your news organization, your commitment to local journalism and your proposal for how you plan to deploy a Report for America journalist.”

RFA is a national service program that places journalists in local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities, a mission that aligns with Underscore’s own. RFA will pay half the incoming journalist’s salary, while Underscore will fund the other half.
